Vampire Romance
Halloween night is just right for partying, especially if you are wearing a vampire costume. But Lorelei is beginning to regret following her friend Dina to this strange party at a tenement in a not-so-good section of town. The fact that everyone at the party is dressed as a vampire did not bother her as much as the fact that they all seem a little too believable in the role. There is something that isn't right with this place, and when Dina's screams lead her to a gruesome discovery, Lorelei is in a battle for her very soul.
Julian Cavanaugh, an eight centuries old vampire, spends Halloween nights outside the tenement as a reminder of what he no longer is; a vampire yes, but because of custom blended cigarettes, he no longer needs to feed. Though he has vowed to stay out of "vampire business, he cannot help but act when he hears the screams of an unwilling victim. He is too late to save her, but rescues her friend from certain death. He brings her to his home to recover from the vampire's compulsion but his interference has attracted the attention of an ancient and powerful vampire. He is aware of Julian's differences and wants to know how these changes are happening and what they mean for the vampire race. Julian and Lorelei set out to find out why the elder wants to stop him and their journey for answers reveals a shocking truth. Can Lorelei accept the future and her role in it?
Julian is a well written and believable character. His inner struggle between what he is and his reluctance to give in to it creates a sympathetic character for the reader. Lorelei unwittingly gets missed up in a world she does not understand and has to make a decision that will change her life forever. The author, however, has taken this familiar storyline to a new level with a good plot and characters the reader will make a connection with.
Ms. Knights weaves a tale through time that captures the reader's imagination. Her ability to intertwine vampire lore and her unique take on the race lends believability to her story. Her writing has a comfortable style that puts the reader at ease. I was especially intrigued by the premise of the evolution of the race and the implications. I am looking forward to the continuation of the story in Vampire Apocalypse -Book Two: Apotheosis.4 Out of 5 Fangs
