Gwen Gellman is in deep undercover when everything goes wrong and two cops are killed. She leaves the force and works as a P. I. A fourteen-year-old girl is missing and the girl's mother asks Gwen to find her. Several other young girls turn up dead. Are they connected? Gwen looks into the case, but it leads her to places not expected and forces her to come to grips with her own life and past. Gwen finds she has powers she never knew existed, and she isn't really what and who she thought she was.

Elaine Cunningham has written a fast-paced drama/mystery that really fills the bill. It has everything. A likeable kick-butt heroine who has a vulnerable side and a story with just enough occult to add spice to the mix but not turn off people not attuned to the occult. The secondary characters are well-drawn and some are fascinating. Shadows in the Darkness is a compelling, hard to put down story. I look forward to Ms. Cunningham's next book as the ending promises there is much more to come.
