When Wesley Atherton gives up his seat on a train he doesn't realize it will change his life. Katherine (Kate) Lawson is also riding the train and comments on how nice Wesley is. Wesley turns to Kate and gets lost in her green eyes. He learns she's engaged, but he still is compelled to pursue her. He manages to convince her to go to dinner and the theater with him. After the date, Wesley tries to convince Kate to come home with him, but she refuses. When she leaves the train, a woman (Lila, a patient of Wesley's) hollers to her that she needs to make a choice and change her destiny. Kate runs back into Wesley's arms. The car they are riding in derails on the way to Wesley's and crashes into the tunnel wall.

Wesley survives with only a dislocated shoulder, but Kate sustains a head injury and is rushed to the hospital where Wesley works. After surgery, while Kate is in recovery, Lila is admitted to the hospital. When Wesley goes in to see Lila, she tells him that "Death" has been cheated and has decided that Kate has to pay. She tells Wesley that he needs to stay with Kate and protect her because "Death" is not finished with her. Wesley doesn't believe Lila. He thinks she is hallucinating. But when Kate gets out of the hospital and things begin to happen, Wesley is forced to face something he didn't believe in and "Death" is willing to use anyone who is close to Kate to get even.
"In The Still Of The Night" is a very sensual and intense novel filled with suspense and overflowing with emotion. Lara Williams has created characters that draw the reader's emotions and show the importance of love, trust and faith in those we love. The story itself is extremely well written and held my interest until I read the last word. I look forwarded to reading more novels by Lara Williams in the future.
