In December of 1963, Dannie is an actress on a television show. She has just become engaged to the leading man on the show, Tyle. Zane McCaul is a college professor, writer, who has written a book that is to be made into a movie and he is a good friend of the producer, who is also the producer of Dannie's sitcom with Tyle. Most of all Dannie wants the lead in Zane's movie, and he has a lot of influence with the producer, so she tries her best to convince him she is right for the part. In this she succeeds. Dannie finds Zane arrogant, too old for her, but she also finds that there is chemistry between them. McCaul quickly decides that Dannie is not right for actor Tyle, but is right for him. With Tyle, she appears to have more of a brother-sister relationship, and Tyle has given her a very large diamond engagement ring. Is their engagement a publicity stunt as Zane hopes, or is she truly in love with the handsome actor. Who will win the lovely Dannie? Zale or Tyle?
I can well believe the year's setting, as the book reads like a romance of the 60s. We are told that Dannie is young, but I don't believe her age is ever mentioned. She does drink alcohol, so I'm assuming she's over twenty-one. Most writers who find their books turned into movies would find the input Zane has into this endeavor unbelievable, but this is a romance and we have to get the man and woman together. One might wonder at Tyle's ambivalence to the woman he's engaged to marry, but the author does handle that satisfactorily. Also, I'm not sure today's woman would put up with some of Zane's actions, and Dannie is well within her rights to protest some of them. If you are looking for a light, show-biz, romance of the 60s, A Dazzling Spring by C. J. Winters will fill the bill.
