Alex Mendez is a police officer who comes up against the forces of evil and is left partially paralyzed. After a difficult, but miraculous recovery from a near death experience he begins to take an interest in religion. As he struggles to recover and face life with paralysis he finds his faith in himself and his beliefs are about to be tested.

Officer Lieutenant Danny Peterson is Alex's best friend and the godfather of his daughter. He is determined to discover and capture the person or persons who assaulted his best friend.  Meanwhile, Danny is deeply embroiled in trying to solve a rash of mysterious homicides that are occurring in town. People are being "scared to death" in groups or alone and there doesn't seem to be any logical explanation for their deaths, except for their connection to a wheelchair bound teenager.

While the death toll rises, the mystery comes to Alex's front steps as his wife and daughter become crucial components in a battle of good and evil as old as time.

In the Breath of God is a spiritual adventure that delves into the paranormal. The premise of the book is basically one of good versus evil with lots of Christian symbolism thrown in.  Hancock does a good job in holding your attention by focusing on the story from multiple points of view.  This story is less about Alex and more about how his family and friends cope with the unexpected curves life throws at them. In fact, the majority of the story is actually told from Lisa and Danny's perspectives.  This book starts out slow because of the thick description the author employs but it really starts to speed up after the opening scene.  Although the ultimate message is inspirational this book definitely edges into the horror genre and is not for the faint of heart.  I give In the Breath of God three out of five stars.
