The History of Sex, Contraception and How to Write Sensual Scenes

I promised, in my last column, to provide links regarding the history of sex. Well…I won’t go into everything that came up when I did a Google.com search on that topic, but rest assured I quickly scanned past several of the links.  The ones I’ve provided below have some “adult” content, but they are not “R” rated.  Don’t think I could handle those sites without blushing, if you get my drift.  Also, since I am covering the topic of “sex” pertaining to using it in your writing, I’ve also included several links for those of you who want to write sensual scenes...

A Short History of the Sexual Revolution  (http://www.people.virginia.edu/~rjh9u/sexhistory.html) From the University of Virginia, this site covers major changes in sexual attitudes from the 1800s.

Ancient Gynecology (http://hsc.virginia.edu/hs-library/historical/antiqua/textg.htm) Rather interesting but brief discussion on women’s bodies in antiquity, birth control, etc.

Ancient Oral Contraceptives  (http://www.phm.gov.au/exhibits/archive/taking/ancient.htm) This site has a limited amount of information, but it briefly discusses ancient contraceptives and the use of powerful herbs to prevent pregnancy.

Apple of Eden’s Brief History of Sex  (http://www.appleofeden.com/Merchant/historyofsex.htm) This site has a good discussion on the history of sexual behavior from ancient times to the present.

Harlequin’s “On Writing Romance” (http://www.eharlequin.com/cms/learntowrite) Although this is a great general research site for writing romances, they presently have two articles that discuss writing sex scenes: How to Build Sexual Tension by Susan Pezzack, Editor, and Getting in the Mood by Tony and Lori Karayianni (a.k.a. Tori Carrington).

History of Contraception (http://desires.com/1.6/Sex/Museum/museum1.html) This site provides an interesting discussion about ancient (and modern) contraception.

Romance Web Gateway - LoveScenes  (http://www.geocities.com/romgateway/articles/sensual.html) This site supplies several articles, written by various authors (including my favorite writing guru, Alicia Rasley), on the fine art of writing love scenes.

Sexual Technique Tips (http://www.ivillage.com/topics/relation/0,,166929,00.html) This iVillage site provides additional links to online magazine articles (i.e., Redbook, Cosmopolitan, etc.) regarding techniques, tips, questions you might have, etc. Some good information can be found here for spicing up your novel.

Sensual Romance Articles  (http://sensualromance.writerspace.com/articles.html) Interesting collection of articles on writing sensual romances from the Writers Space website.

Sex Education Links (http://www.bigeye.com/sexeducation/history.html) This site has an in-depth discussion of the topic, including sexual practices from ancient through modern times.

Sex in the Romance (http://home.epix.net/~jlferri/sexrom.html) A rather interesting discussion by John L. Ferri, comparing how different authors approach romance and sex in their novels.

Victorian Men, Women and Menstruation (http://www.menstruation.com.au/contributors/bleedinwomanpart3.html) Interesting discussion of Victorian attitudes toward women and menstruation.

Sarah Weddington’s Contraception Site  (http://www.pinn.net/~sunshine/whm2001/wedding.html) This site provides an in-depth discussion of the use of contraception from ancient times to the present.

That’s it for now.  Have fun surfing!
